"This is a big one."

The Indians, Mets and Mariners appear to be on the verge of a three-team deal in which J.J. Putz would go to New York as the setup man to the newly acquired Francisco Rodriguez.

The particulars of the deal were still being worked out Wednesday night at the Bellagio, but it appears Franklin Gutierrez is headed to the M's, and Mets right-handed reliever Joe Smith and Mariners infielder Luis Valbuena are coming to Cleveland.

Mets right-hander Aaron Heilman and Mariners outfielder Jeremy Reed are also believed to be involved, though it is unclear who is headed where.

Stay tuned. Many, many more updates to come.

UPDATE (10:38 p.m. ET): Got confirmation on the particulars of this trade. This could get done tonight.

The Indians receive Smith and Valbuna.

The Mariners receive Gutierrez from the Tribe and Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets.

The Mets receive Putz, Reed and reliever Sean Green.

So, unless I'm missing something (such as other Minor Leaguers being involved), it's a nine-player swap, with the Indians giving up Gut to get a situational right-handed reliever and an infield prospect that the Mariners were considering for their starting second base job next season.

What do you think?

UPDATE No. 2 (11:50 p.m. ET): Holy Lord, this thing just keeps growing. It's actually a 12-player swap, and it does involve other Minor Leaguers. Nobody from the Indians, though.

In addition to the players previously mentioned, the M's are getting right-hander Maikel Cleto, left-hander Jason Vargas and outfielder Ezekiel Carrera from the Mets.

Wow.

If this happens, be good to Joe. I truly love him and he is a good kid. He will definitely be missed.

If we get Smith, and Valbuena for ONLY Gutierrez- this has the possibility of being another amazing move by Shapiro.

Smith was one of the few guys to produce out of the NYM bullpen last year, and a slick fielding young Caribbean middle infielder from Seattle? Sound familiar? Twice?

Smith looks to be a good pickup but I think people are forgetting the kind of season Gutierrez had in 2007. I know he struggled in the '08 campaign but then so did most of the Indians roster.

Valbuena is a prospect and we know that Shapiro loves his prospects. Still, it's a crap shoot. I'd like to give Franklin some more time but with the insane amount of outfielders the Indians have, combined with the fact that if Gutierrez has another sub par year they might not even get this much for him, I'd say it's probably a good move. But something tells me this might bite us in the butt like getting rid of Brandon Phillips did.

This doesn't satisfy the Tribe's offseason infielder acquisition does it? They still need another proven guy. Glad to see their making moves though. Braden Looper next?

I think this has to be the precursor for another deal/deals. It seems like our INF is getting rather crowded, or Peralta will be moving to 3B and Asdrubal is at SS with a Valbuena/Barfield Platoon.

Yeah, I really hope Shapiro isn't planning on starting Valbuena (at, I'm assuming, second, shifting Asdrubal and Jhonny over). The kid only played the first 18 games of his major league career last year. Yeah, Seattle was considering starting him, but it's Seattle.

According to Jim Street of mlb.com, the deal is done. The Indians get Smith and a good minor leaguer for Gutierrrez. Sounds like a good deal for us. I'll miss Gutz' defense but his offense was hurting us.

Really, be good to Joe in Cleveland. He was one of my favorites and I will miss him more than anything. He's a good kid and I wish him luck with the Indians.

Not to mention an absolute steal for the Mets. Putz and K rod is a deadly combination. Indians get Smith, which I am thrilled about. Only leaves Perez as the one lefty though.

I love frank, not as much as my girlfriend though. I wish him the best. He lost his spot and I think it makes the roster more flexible so it should be a win situation for the tribe, and again hopefully Gut learns to hit the breaking pitch. Thanks for all the runs you have saved, the big homer on opening day, the hit in game 2 v the red sox. Best of luck.

Better for Gut anyway. May get the starting job with Seattle so good for him.

One website said the Indians were sending Gutierrez and minor leaguers to the Mariners. No names have yet been mentioned on who the minor leaguers might be. I think we have to wait and see who the Indians are giving up in addition to Gutierrez but my guess is it will not involve any of the Indian's high profile prospects. From what we know at this point it seems like a good trade for the Indians. Smith has had back- to- back good years with the Mets and Valbuena looks like a good prospect who could start at second in 2009 if he has a good Spring. Smith and Valbuena are both young and their salaries will be low for a few years. I think the Indians shot their budget on Wood (assuming he passes his physical). I don't think we can expect the Indians to sign any more high profile FA's during the winter. Valbuena had a good year in the minors last year split between AA and AAA. He hit .300 and had a good ratio of BB to SO. It also looks like he might have some base stealing ability based on his minor league stats. I think he will be given every opportunity to win the 2nd base job with Cabrera moving to short and Peralta to 3rd. Smith throws side arm and is very tough on right handed hitters but is not nearly as effective against left handers.

If Anthony's latest update is correct, Seattle got an absolute haul in this trade. I think the Indians got a good deal, getting a solid bullpen option for a fourth outfielder. Gutierrez was fantastic on defense but he wasn't starting in Cleveland this year. Valbuena can compete for a job or provide depth. Either way, I like the youth and the clean up in the outfield. Solid trade, Shapiro.

I'm waiting for the Shapiro/Dolan Bashers to find a way to say this was a "cheap" deal.

I guess this brings our roster to 40. Looks like we won't be taking anyone in the Rule 5 draft on Thursday. Hope we don't lose anyone either.
I like this deal because we free up an outfield spot for Crowe or Laporta down the road (both if Choo goes back to Korea). While I'll miss Franklin's defense, I hope he's able to bounce back in Seattle this season and get the starting job.
Smith will definitely be a valuable guy in the bullpen with his submarine arm. Although Valbuena probably isn't a short term answer at 2b, he would be a valuable platoon guy with Carroll this season. Wedge has plenty of options in the infield now, especially if we aren't able to deal Barfield. You're working magic Shapiro. Can you find any takers for Marte or Mujica now? Do the Yokohama Baystars need anyone else?

Actually, the 40 man roster will still have a spot, well, not once Wood signs though, cuz it was down to 38 after The Wild Man from Borneo "went Japanese". I wouldn't be surprised now to see Barfield dealt, as Valbuena seems like Shapiro is positioning for future 2b. And if he turns into defensive gold, that would be striking three times... Vizquel, Cabrera.. ? Excuse me while I count my chickens.

The 40 man should be down to 37, since Tom Mastny left. So there is a little room there.

I hope this proves to be a very smart move, because I am really going to miss Gutierrez! I love him almost as much as Grady.

Almost.

I agree that the infield seems to be getting a bit crowded. Peralta will be playing left field before the All Star Break.

Wow - the Mariners made out like bandits on this! Chavez & Guiterrez - I'd be thrilled with that OF, but I like defense. And the Mets now have Putz & K-Rod in their bully - yikes!

Ellie - you've got some WSU Raiders here in Cleveland, so we'll keep an eye on Joe, not a problem.

Good luck to Franklin - hope he finally gets the chance to play everyday and succeed. Can't get better on the bench...

This trade the tribe make last night is a soild trade because Joe Smith is a groundball pitcher and throws strikes when he is on and is a side arm guy which is a different look. As for the infielder the tribe got from seattle Luis Valbuena nothing special but he should be a good one and can help this team in the future. Hopefully Mark Shapiro is not done this offseason making moves but so far so good for the tribe this offseason.

If/When the Indians sign Wood the roster will be at 40. We had thirty nine spots taken before the winter meetings.

We sold Mastny to Japan.
38.
Traded Gutierrez.
37.
Received Smith and Valbuena.
39.
Sign Wood.
40.

Cut Marte 39. Find a #3 starter 40.

Amen, Fuzzy!

I guess I am the only person thinking that this deal is troublesome down the road. Shapiro has already guaranteed this situational righty a roster spot as he believes he can be a full inning pitcher. Meaning he will not be cut due to ineffectiveness because Shapiro cannot justify the trade without his presence on the roster.

I would agree that future trades must be in the forefront of Shapiro's mind. His 25-man roster is overloaded. Adding Smith simply logjams the bullpen with 6 guaranteed slots filled: Wood, Lewis, Perez, Betancourt, Smith and Kobayashi. This leaves little room for Adam Miller, John Meloan, Rich Rundles, Jeff Stevens, and Ed Mujica. Hopefully they cut ties with Mujica.

If Seattle liked Gutierrez that much then we should have been able to get something more useful out of the deal, like a SP, than a spot reliever and Triple-A middle infield depth. I am unimpressed.

Hopefully Mark Shapiro is not done this offseason making moves but so far so good for the tribe this offseason.
