Lee named AL starter

Cliff Lee has been named the starting pitcher for the American League All-Star team after a first half that saw him go 12-2 with a 2.31 ERA.

"A lot of pitchers had outstanding first halves," AL manager Terry Francona said at a press conference this morning. "None have measured up to Cliff. From his very first start to his start three days ago, he's been the best pitcher in the league."

Pretty amazing season for Lee, and this just makes it all the more special.

Should the Indians try to talk with Lee about an extension as soon as possible? I would hate for him to be next years CC, if he were to continue his amazing pitching, win the Cy Young, and then decide he is worth as much money as CC, and turn down any offers, and maybe get traded mid-next season. Cliff Lee probably will not be this good for the next few years, or even for the rest of the season, but if can be similar to the pitcher he has been this year, than keeping him and Fausto atop that rotation needs to happen. Even before this year, Lee has proved he wins ballgame. Even if it is just the luck of pitching on the right day, he has gotten the job done, and I hope the Indians front office is really giving this all some thought.

I am sure the Indians will hold off offering Lee an extension. He has always had decent stuff but when his confidence is as high as it is this season he can sure pitch well. I still think there number priority should be to ATTEMPT to sign CC. I think most of us Indians fans still believe if we can keep our team healthy and catch some breaks we will back to the top of the A.L. again. We will definately need our ace back to do that. The front office sure has some big decisions to make in the next few months as this season has proved it is very difficult for a small market team to overcome injuries and several player personell decisions.

Why isn't Lee starting the Indians-Mariners game tomorrow? Does he need 3 days rest after the 2-innings he put in during the All-Star Game?
