Roster moves coming
By Anthony Castrovince/MLB.com
The Indians are expected to announce several roster decisions this morning.
I’m still expecting an Opening Day roster similar to what I posted here. My hunch is that the Indians will watch David Huff’s outing against the White Sox today before officially announcing anything regarding that last open rotation spot, but the other decisions could all be announced today.
One change to that roster speculation I posted: FOXSports.com reported this morning that Jeremy Sowers has been placed on outright waivers. That’s not terribly surprising, given Sowers’ struggles the last few years, his status coming back from shoulder soreness and the need for roster spots. The Indians will need at least three spots for Minor League invitees Austin Kearns, Mark Grudzielanek and Jamey Wright.
As soon as the moves are official, I’ll post them here.
UPDATE: Here’s what I know so far…
Michael Brantley made the team. He’ll be the starting left fielder.
Jensen Lewis made the bullpen.
Reliever Saul Rivera (a non-roster invitee) did not make the bullpen. He’ll head to Columbus. He has an out in his contract in mid-May, if he’s not with the big league club.
Wyatt Toregas was optioned out. No surprise there, though Toregas did have a strong camp. This means that Lou Marson is the starting catcher, as was anticipated all along.
Chris Gimenez didn’t make the club. But that was clear when he was removed from the 40-man last month.
More to come on Indians.com.
UPDATE No. 2: Trevor Crowe was also optioned out, meaning Austin Kearns has also made the club as the fourth outfielder.
Sowers was, indeed, placed on waivers, and he cleared. He has been outrighted to Triple-A Columbus.
Rule 5 pickup Hector Ambriz will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, with right elbow tendinitis. So the Indians don’t yet have to offer him back to the D-backs.
UPDATE No. 3: Aside from the last rotation spot (which will be determined today) and ensuring the non-roster guys who will be added get through the next few days healthy, the Indians are set.
Andy Marte was also informed he made the team, and the Indians will purchase the contracts of Mark Grudzielanek, Jamey Wright and Kearns this weekend.
