Marson promoted from Columbus

For the Indians on Monday night, it will be one acquisition in the Cliff Lee trade doing the pitching and another doing the catching.

Catcher Lou Marson was promoted from Triple-A Columbus and is in the starting lineup for the Tribe’s series opener against the Rangers. Marson, who was set to catch fellow former Phillie Carlos Carrasco, is the fifth player called up from Columbus in September.

The 23-year-old Marson has spent most of the ’09 season at the Triple-A level with Lehigh Valley in the Phillies’ organization and with Columbus. He batted a combined .277 with 18 doubles, two homers and 33 RBIs in 91 games. Known as a contact hitter and not a power guy, he had a .361 on-base percentage. He appeared in seven games with the Phillies earlier this season, going 4-for-17.

Seriously, people, you HAVE to love this team. I’m all for calling Marson up, but is there another team in baseball that’s carrying FOUR catchers on their roster right now? It’s comedy gold! We should start having them divide up game, two innings each and rotate who gets a third inning. What’s even sadder is that none of them are the guy we wanted (Martinez) or the guy we want (Santana). You’ve got to love the Tribe.
Anyway, I do appreciate the move of pairing Marson up with Carrasco. They seemed to make a big deal out of the pitcher/catcher combo with Lee (who has managed perfectly fine without Shoppach since he left), so I’d buy that perhaps Carrasco will have more luck with a catcher who knows him better.
And, hey, we’re getting closer to each starter having their own personal catcher!

I like the personal catcher idea LACF, they should call up Santana … what’s really sad, is I wonder what it takes to get a leg up on this competition? If Marson manages to go 1-4, his BA will already be the highest of the 4 catchers, by 34 points.

Santana should be called up.

Marson isn’t a kind of guy that is going to produce for you.

Haha: your right our catcher’s suck.

And why can’t Kelly Shoppach stop snapping bats?!

ST, that is freaking hilarious!

Ted, Santana’s still in AA. I know we all think an awful lot of him, but he’s not ready yet. There’s absolutely no reason to rush him. Let him have time to develop at a natural pace.

For that matter, chances are good he’ll be catching Rondon, and possibly Pino AND Carrasco in AAA next year, which is going to be really helpful when he’s catching all of them in Cleveland in 2011.
