Sipp coming up; Jackson optioned

So much for that talk about staying the course with the relieves on hand. Eric Wedge announced after tonight’s 8-7 win that Tony Sipp is being promoted from Triple-A Columbus, with Zach Jackson getting optioned out.

Sipp might not slide right into the late-inning setup role, but with Rafael Perez (and everybody else) struggling in setup situations, Sipp will bring some new blood. Jackson was never viewed as a candidate to work late in games. He was the long man, and he posted a 5.79 ERA in two appearances.

I don’t think the Indians intended to promote Sipp (0-0, 3.86 ERA in seven innings at Columbus) so soon, but this battered bullpen forced their hand.

“We’re working to try to get everybody back on track,” Wedge said. “Tony is the guy for us right now. We’re not quite sure how we’re going to work him into the mix. A lot of it depends on how these other guys progress. We’re taking it day by day right now with the struggles we’ve had here.”

Another middle relief comment: If Aaron Laffey gave up one (1) run in seven innings and Kerry Wood got a save, how is it that we only won, 8-7? I’ll tell you how it is. The middle relief stunk. Mr Shapiro, when will you do something about the biggest weakness on this club? When will you insist that the owner give you extra money for middle relief? Your job is on the line, Mr Shapiro because Mr Dolan won’t fire himself.

So why not send Perez down to work on his stuff instead of Jackson? Are they going to make Zach a starter in Columbus now? How does any of this make sense?
Need to mix up the bully – at least maybe tinker with the order that we’re bringing the guys in.
Good Job Aaron – great game!!

So Laffey had an impressive outing as I suggested. He did what he is supposed to do: dominate a pathetic offense. And while his stat line looks great (7 IP, 1ER) I am slightly concerned with the 7 hits and 3 walks which required 5 DPs to save him. He is a pitch-to-contact guy but his WHIP is elevated for a SP. Looking ahead to the future I have to think that Laffey will keep that rotation spot and Lewis will be optioned under the guise of “needing work to get back where he needs to be” thus giving Wedge and Shapiro what they wanted out of spring training. I still think his two starts against the hopeless Royals are a major factor but if he needs confidence then he got it.

Good job Laffey. If only I lived at all closer, I would have been one of the faithful cheering you on! Knew you had it all along, keep it up.

Yeah Jackson is the problem in the pen…grow a pair wedge/shapiro and send the people who dont preform to the minors….its called accountability
