"Diabolical… He was setting me up from day one."

The Rangers really pulled a fast one on the Indians yesterday. Two fast ones, in fact. Not only did they bat out of order, they also re-inserted a player into their lineup after he had been taken out.

According to Jack Efta, the Indians’ Spring Training Special Assistant to the Media Relations Director (great title, huh?), this is how it all went down…

In the bottom of the fifth, Travis Metcalf took over Michael Young’s spot at third base and in the No. 3 spot of the lineup, and Brandon Boggs took over Marlon Byrd’s spot in right field and at No. 6.

In the top of the sixth, Metcalf was due to lead off, but No. 4 hitter Andruw Jones batted out of order and led off instead. Metcalf then batted second.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jones moved from center to right. Greg Golson entered the game in center and should have been in the No. 6 spot, replacing Boggs, who is now out of the game.

But in the top of the eighth, Golson batted in Jones’ spot at No. 4, rather than Boggs’ No. 6 spot.

And in the top of the ninth, Boggs reentered the game and batted in his original No. 6 spot. In the bottom of the inning, he returned to right field, replacing Jones.

Suffice to say the Indians’ media relations folks were on the phone with the Elias Sports Bureau for quite a while after the game, trying to piece this all together.

As for Eric Wedge and the Tribe coaching staff, well: “We don’t keep track of that in Spring Training,” Wedge said.

OK, then.

Well let’s hope they do a better job of keeping track come April!

Yeah, no kidding, Julia. Shouldn’t Spring Training be used to its full potential? I’m not so sure the coaching staff simply wasn’t paying attention.

I’ll side with Wedge. I mean he’s trying to figure out if Garko can play the outfield, if Barfield can hit, who is going to start in the rotation, who’ll be in the pen, if Pronk is still human, and most of all, why in the world Andy Marte is still hanging around.. I don’t think he’s too concerned with the other team, either.

And that’s just the beginning, did you know that Travis Metcalf and AndrUw Jones don’t even have kids together!?!!?

Un grand oui !
